PRAISE FOR CHOIR
Letter From
Britain
Praise for the Christchurch Harmonic Society’s choir has reached Mr L. D. Austin, a music critic and teacher, of Wellington, in a letter from a friend in England.
Mr Austin has sent on to “The Press” the letter saying: “During the Commonwealth Arts Festival I heard the choir several times and their performances made me feel very proud to be a Kiwi. Not only did they sing splendidly, but they looked so well, the ladies in jade green with long white gloves and the men resplendent in customary evening wear. Their deportment and discipline were a joy to watch, every moment and gesture in perfect accord. After their thrilli"g rendering of ‘Belshazzar's Feast,’ conducted by the composer, the audience gave them a terrific ovation which continued for more than 10 minutes. I have rarely heard such tumultuous applause.”
