Fijian Legislative Party On Visit

WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. Six members of the Fiji Legislative Council arrived in Wellington today on a 10-day visit to New Zealand.

They were met at the airport by the Deputy Secretary of the Department of External Affairs (Mr G. D. L. White). The party is led by Ratu E. T. T Cakobau. It will visit most New Zealand centres. Other members are Ratu G. Cakobau, Mr A. I. N. Deoki, Chandra Pal Singh, Mr R. A. Kearsley and Mr Josua R. Rabukawaqa. Ratu E. T. T. Cakobau is the senior Fijian member of the Legislative Council. He has represented his country at Rugby and cricket and is also a keen golfer. He was educated at Wanganui Collegiate College and later at Auckland Teachers’ Training College. Ratu G. ted in New South Wales and since the war has served mainly as a roko in the Fijian administration. Mr A. I. N. Deoki is the senior Indian elected member of the Legislative Council. He read law at Auckland University College and has practised as a barrister and solicitor in Fiji since 1941. Chandra Pal Singh is a dairy farmer and also owns a bus and taxi service in Fiji. Mr R. A. Kearsley resigned from the Fiji police force in 1951 after reaching the rank of inspector. He studied law at Auckland University and is the only European member of the party. Mr Josua R. Rabukawaqa was appointed administrative officer of the northern division in 1961 and was elected to the Legislative Council in 1964.
