Fishing Limits

Sir,—At last members of Parliament have awakened to Japanese “fisherman diplomacy.” They are all smiles when they can fish virtually where they like, and give us some lessons in modern fishing methods. But now New Zealand is finally giving its fishing industry some incentive and assistance (which includes a 12-mile limit) and excluding the Japanese from our better fishing grounds, the smiles disappear. The 12mile limit must be policed as best it can, and mure use made of our legal powers rather than fear of harming Japan-ese-New Zealand relations by some justified arresting and impounding. Poaching will certainly increase if Japan refuses to recognise our extended limit. As Mr Kirk advocates, New Zealand must “cut out this wringing of

hands, this apologetic attitude, and look after New Zealand interests.” Let’s try some modern “gunboat diplomacy.”—Yours, etc., GUS. October 9, 1965.
