BENMORE TROUT
Legal Minimum Now 14in.
"The Press" Special Service
WELLINGTON, Sept. 14. The legal minimum size of trout caught on Lake Benmore is now 14in.
This limit also applies to all lakes and rivers in the Mackenzie Country in the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society district, west of Burkes Pass.
It is now illegal to fish in Lake Benmore boat harbour, or from either side of the mole at Sailors Cutting, or within 100yds of the wharf at the boat harbour at Haldon Station.
These are the effects of modifications to the Fisheries Regulations gazetted last week. The regulations also provide that trout fishermen in the Westland Acclimatisation Society district now have an extended season.
Seven rivers in the Westland district will in future be opened on September 1, instead of October 1. They are the Big Wanganui, the Big Waitaha, the Cook, Fox, Karangarua, Waiho and Whataroa rivers.
Although gazetting occurred too late this year to officially open the season a month earlier than usual, the Westland Acclimatisation Society has already decided, with the co-operation of the Marine Department, to open these rivers experimentally from September 1. There are no changes in lures, baits or limit bags.
