Factory Workers Asked To Leave Quietly
Notices had been posted in the factories requesting employees on shift work to be as quiet as possible when leaving the premises, Fletcher Industries, Ltd., of Mandeville street, informed the Riccarton Borough Council. The industries in the area were incompatible with a residential district, said the Mayor (Mr E. J. Bradshaw). However, the council could not force them out of business. The employees were entitled to take their cars to work. It was not an easy problem to solve. The council and previous councils had done everything possible to alleviate the problem, and the firms had endeavoured to co-operate.
Cr. R. W. J. Harington said he had had an approach from two elderly residents living about a qaurter of a mile from the Mandeville street factory. They had complained about the coded signals calling persons to the telephone, which sounded like beeps from a satellite.
A conference of residents, the council, and officials of the factory, had been held, and residents had been invited to tell the factory management of all nuisances that were affecting them, so that
steps could be taken to eliminate htem, said the Mayor. Traffic Hazard.— The council will support the Canterbury Progress League’s representation to the Christchurch City Council to improve the traffic hazard at the -intersection of Harper avenue, Deans avenue, and Fendalton road. The Mayor said that the corner was outside the Riccarton council’s boundary. Empire Games.—On the motion of Cr. R. S. Lester the council decided to write to Commonwealth and Empire Games Promotion (Canterbury) and congratulate it on obtaining the New Zealand nomination for Christchurch for the 1970 Games. Patriotic Council.—Cr. J. B. Midgley was again appointed the council’s representative on the Canterbury Patriotic Council.
