PUT OUT OF RACE

Hal Special Unlucky The New Brighton Trotting Club is certain to receive criticism for its selection of the field for the Bowhill Handicap at its September meeting at Addington Raceway on Saturday. Hal Special had a strong form background at trials and it was surprising that he should have been among the six horses which failed to get a start. Hal Special finished fifth in a head of the free-for-all at the Methven trials on August 24, well-performed horses in Peel, Gay Robin, Kyle View and Black Tryax finishing in front of him. He was second to Tunnel Road at the Addington trials last week, while on Saturday he won the Glenmark Handicap at the Amberley matinee meeting. Hal Special’s Tinwald owner-trainer, J. L. Ferguson, took him to both Addington and Amberley last week so that he could show sufficiently good form to entitle him to a start on Saturday. Hal Special started in the Avon Handicap at the New Brighton meeting on September 4, finishing last after another hqrse had collapsed a wheel of his sulky. Hal Special raced quite consistently last season and gained two wins and 14 placings from 31 starts. The New Brighton club rather surprisingly left Flying Bonnie and Smart Lass in the field for the Bowhill Handicap. Both horses were to have raced at the Wellington meeting last night when a win would have made them ineligible for Saturday’s race. The Woolston trainer, A. J. Bourne, had Desperado eliminated from the Bowhill Handicap and his only other runner at the meeting, Legendary, v/as the only horse eliminated from the Raceway ! Stakes.
