TASMAN PACT Plea For Aust. Small Farmers
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright i CANBERRA, September 2. The Australia-New Zealand free trade agreement would wreck many small farmers £ reducing for the frozen vegetable industry, Ir R. Davies (Labour, Tasmania) said today.
He charged the DeputyPrime Minister, Mr J. McEwen, with being prepared to “sell down the drain" many small farmers.
Speaking in the Budget debate in the House of Representatives, Mr Davies said more than 1000 small farmers in his electorate in Northern Tasmania would be affected. “On behalf of these farmers I would like the Minister for Trade, Mr McEwen, to tell us if we are to be expendable. “Are we to go by the board so Australia can gain some other advantages in this free
trade agreement with New Zealand?”
He said frozen peas and beans shipped from Tasmania to the mainland incurred a freight of A2l7s a ton, compared with a freight of A222s a ton from New Zealand. However, New Zealand growers could dehydrate their product, giving less than a quarter Of the original weight and incurring a lower general cargo rate. This was a direct and serious threat to the Australian pea and bean industry, he said.
