Smith Will Lead M.C.C. On Tour
(N Z P.A Reuter—Copyright) ' LONDON, August 11. M. J. K. Smith will captain the M.C.C. cricket team on its tour of Australia and New Zealand, it was announced in London today. Smith, the 32-year-old captain of the Warwickshire county side, will be making his third overseas tour as England's captain. The first occasion was in India in the winter of 196364, and last year he led the M.C.C. team which won the test series in South Africa. England’s defeat by South Africa at Nottingham earlier
this week was the first time that Smith had lost a test match in 15 games as England captain. He has played in 37 tests.
Although his leadership has come in for some criticism, Smith’s only possible rival for captaincy was M. C. Cowdrey, who is generally expected to be named vice-captain when the full team for the forthcoming tour is announced on Sunday. ! With Smith’s appointment the main offices in the tour party have been filled. Mr S. C. Griffith, the M.C.C. secretary, will act as manager, and the former England captain, J. Ikin. as baggage master and assistant manager.
