S.I. SQUASH TITLES
Excellent squash was seen when the South Island squash championships began at the Chester street courts last night. Top seed, G. L. Bird (Timaru), was a mixture of bril liance and elementary errors against R. Goodall, and was hard pushed to win the first game 10-8. Thereafter, however, he was in complete control. W. A. Green (Timaru), who is seeded fifth, found unexpected opposition from the local player, R. D. Monk, who fought back well to take the third game. In the fourth, Green’s greater experience and fitness showed up and he ran out the winner. 9-5. Mrs R. Woodhead, top woman, won her first round match with out losing a point, but the best game in the women’s section was that between Mrs C. Arne son and Miss S. McKellar.
