SERVICEMEN FROM U.S.
Aid To Wives Planned Women members of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society last night met to decide what they could do for the wives and families of American servicemen stationed in Christchurch during the Antarctic season. Miss R. McLean, who convened the meeting, said the group was at present feeling its way, but she felt something quite important could develop. The group had decided to welcome wives and children on their arrival.
It was considering the establishment of a kit of small household utensils and equipment which a new arrival would be able to use till her own personal furnishings arrived.
The group would also assist families to find suitable housing if that were necessary. Mrs W. H. Withrow, wife of the United States base commander at Harewood, had earlier told the group that finding suitable housing for servicemen and their families could be a problem. Miss McLean said that wives would be shown shopping centres and local beaches. “We aim to assist with the smaller things which help to make a woman’s life easier,” she said.
Other meetings would be held to develop the scheme. About 20 members of the society attended.
