NOTTINGHAM, August 5,
Sotlth Africa, which won the toss and elected to bat, had scored 76 for four wickets at lunch on the opening day of the second cricket test against England today.
The Warwickshire fast bowler, T. W. Cartwright, who was brought into the team as a late replacement for the injured F. Rumsey, captured the first three wickets.,
In his third over he broke the opening stand when he had H. R. Lance leg before after making seven runs in 45 minutes.
The next ball had D. Lindsay groping outside the offstump and two balls later the new batsman, attempting to drive, only succeeded in edging a catch to the wicketkeeper, J. H. Parks, making South Africa 16 for two wickets. R. G. Pollock scored the first runs off Cartwright with a square drive but then edged four lucky runs between Parks and M. C. Cowdrey. South Africa made only 24 runs off 17 overs in the first hour. Barlow Caught Attacking strokes were rare as Pollock and E. J. Barlow sought to over a bad start. Then Cartwright induced Barlow to try an off
drive and the ball flew to Cowdrey at slip, to make South Africa 42 for three wickets. All three wickets had gone to Cartwright in 8.4 overs at a cost of 17 runs. The' off spinner, F. J. Titmus. claimed the next wicket two rounds later when he had the dangerous K. C. Bland stumped. Pollock and A. Bacher then stopped the threat of a complete collapse, Pollock playing some fine attacking strokes. SOUTH AFRICA First Innings E. J. Barlow, c Cowdrey, b Cartwright .19 H. R.
