Licensing Honrs

Sir, —1 agree with “Granddaughter of a Pioneer” that late closing of hotels would not be in the best interests of the community. Motorists after consuming alcohol would increase the death toll on the roads driving home. Whatever hour is fixed for closing, some proprietors, under pressure from their drinking clients, would break the law. Where 10 o’clock closing was in force, I knew of a case where drinking was going on at midnight and an irate wife of one of the drinkers heaved a stone through the window of the pub. No effort was made to find the window-breaker. Alcohol is a dangerous drug, judging by the fact that two alcoholics are produced every day in New Zealand. Abraham Lincoln said alcohol has many defenders but no defence. All alcohol has to offer is trouble. —Yours, etc., SON OF A PIONEER PUBLICAN. August 5, 1965.
