Gift To Thailand

Sir, —In answer to Mr McMillan’s criticism of the proposed Government gift to Thailand, may I say that insofar as we are a Christian nation our responsibility cannot end with ourselves alone We are meant to be “our brother’s keepers” and part of our rightful concern is toward the underdeveloped countries of the world. Our Government may have difficulty in balancing its budget. Is it not a tendency with nations as with individual families to live to the limit or beyond the limit of income? When, however, we view the discrepancy between our standard of living and that of one South-east Asian neighbour, Thailand, could we feel happy at being seated at the banqueting table of the world and doing nothing to relieve one neighbour’s needs? The rulers of Thailand may show a deplorable irresponsibility. About this we can do nothing. We can, however, look to our own actions.—Yours, etc., (Mrs) JOY JOHNSTON. August 4, 1965.
