DRINKING HOURS
Govt. Views Unchanged (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 27. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said the Government had not changed any of its views on licensing hours as a result of the annual report of the Licensing Control Commission tabled in Parliament yesterday. The commission said the hours were “inequitable and unenforceable and inimical to the best interests of society.” “The Government’s thinking today is the same as it was yesterday,” Mr Holyoake said. He said there could be no extension—or staggering—of hours without a national referendum. Asked if the Government would consider having a referendum at the next General Election, Mr Holyoake said: “We have not seriously considered this yet. A referendum could be held at any time —even this year if necessary. No decision has been taken to hold a referendum or the timing of such.”
