EXTENDED TERM

‘Not Aware Of Public Demand’ (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 27. An extension of Parliament’s term might be justified if New Zealand had adequate constitutional safeguards, the acting president of the Constitutional Society, Mr S. W. Peterson, said today. "But our political parties seem determined to resist the introduction of those safeguards,” Mr Peterson said. He was commenting in a statement on the National Party conference decision strongly favouring extension of the Parliamentary term to four years from the present three years. Mr Peterson said the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) had been quoted as saying a good case could be made for a second chamber of Parliament but .it was unlikely to be introduced in the foreseeable future because there was" little public demand for it. • “The Constitutional Society is not aware of any public demand for a four-year Parliament,” said Mr Peterson.
