GRADING OF TIMBER
Course Next Week
A timber-grading course for timber merchants, sawmillers, and building inspectors in various State departments will be conducted by the New Zealand Forest Service on July 21. 22, 23. The course will consist of a programme of morning lectures held at the Marshland Hail, and practical timbergrading sessions in the afternoons at Sutherland and Company’s sawmill at Ohoka road, Kaiapoi. Mr T. A. Foley, senior timber officer of the Forest Service in Wellington, will be in charge of the course, assisted by Mr N. C. Clifton, timber officer of the Forest Service in Christchurch. This was the second such course to be held this year, said Mr Clifton yesterday, the first course having proved so popular with members of the timber trade that another one had to be organised. “We had 19 at the first course in May, but 25 have enrolled for the course next week,” he said. The course was designed to educate those in the timber trade on the need for the correct grading of radiata pine for specific uses, Mr Clifton said. For instance, “factory” grade radiata pine, which was designed for clear cuttings, was sometimes used for shelving when “merchantable” or “dressing” grade should have been used.
