Room For Mergers
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 14. Mergers of transport firms would not result in monopolistic control, says the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) in the annual report of the Transport Department. “There are still thousands of owner-drivers and small firms owning two or three vehicles only, so there is room tor the larger mergers," Mr McAlpine says. “If larger firms provide efficient service at lower economic cost it is all to the good. “A continuous check will still be maintained, however, to prevent malpractices arising.”
