Driver Hurt When Car Leaves Road
A young woman suffered injuries when toe car she was driving skidded on the icy Main North road, 11 miles south of Cheviot, last evening, and plunged 100 feet down a very steep
gully. The woman. Miss Jennifer Irene Hobson, an Australian on a working holiday in New Zealand, was taken by the Cheviot ambulance to the Christchurch Hospital. She was treated at the scene of the accident by Dr. B. F. Heyward. of Cheviot, and was suffering from neck injuries and shock.
The accident happened about 10 p.m. Miss Hobson was driving one of a convoy of new cars from Picton to
Christchurch for E. H. Boyce and Company. Ltd., cartage contractors. There were 17 cars in the convoy, of several different makes. The cars were travelling about 30 miles an hour, said Constable H. C. Hollander, of Cheviot. The car Miss Hobson was driving skidded towards the left-hand side of the road, then skidded at right-angles across the road.
The car came to rest upside down at the foot of the gully, with part of it in a watercourse. Miss Hobson was pinned in the car, which had no seat belts. She was extricated from the car by other drivers tn the convoy. The car, which was extensively damaged, will be hauled to the road today.
