SUBMARINE DELAYED

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 4. The British submarine Taciturn, based on Sydney, arrived at Auckland today 12 hours late after a blustery trip across the Tasman Sea. She was submerged for 30 hours of the six-day trip, including time spent below the surface while co-operating in an exercise with R.N.Z.A.F. Sunderlands.

She is to play the fox in a month-long hunt by the frigates Otago and Taranaki working in with the Sunderlands and Canberras of the R.N.Z.A.F. About 300 miles off the west coast of the North Island on Thursday, the first Sunderland nosed out the Taciturn from a vast expanse of ocean.

But the pipe warmer “find and shadow into harbour” exercise for the Sunderlands was not as hard as it seemed. The crews knew the rough course the Taciturn would take to reach Auckland froni Sydney.

The Taciturn has six officers and 59 ratings. The captain is Lieutenant-Commander P. D. Hurford.
