WANTED— A BABY
Theatre Group In Trouble
Phoenix Theatre is “desperately” in need of a baby for its production, “After the Wedding,” to be presented in Christchurch on Wednesday. The vice-president of the company (Mr H. L. Smith) said last evening the baby who had been used during the last two weeks had developed chickenpox. “Now we need another. Every care will be taken of it. We are prepared to collect and return it each night for the four nights the play runs,” he said.
Mr Smith said the baby would be used for a little more than half an hour in one act only. “When not on stage the baby will be specially cared for by a member of the company who is herself a mother,” he added. Attempts had been made to do the scene using a doll, but were not successful. When the play, by the New Zealand playwright, Campbell Cauldwell, was presented in Wellington a live baby was used.
If anyone was willing to allow their baby to be used on a voluntary basis, the company would appreciate it very much, said Mr Smith. “If anyone is interested would they telephone Mr Strath McKnight, 61-328,” he asked.
