RESCUED BY FIREMEN
Men Trapped By Fire (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 4. Firemen rescued two men from the burning upper floor of a rooming house in Home street, Wellington, shortly after 3.35 a.m. on Saturday. Six other men made their way to safety down a fire escape before the way was blocked by fast-spreading fire, and two were able to get down a stairway before it was cut off. The rooming house, comprising two units separated by a brick wall, was extensively damaged. Firemen believe the fire started in the shower cabinet about 11 p.m. One of the upper-floor occupants dropped a cigarette on to a pillow which caught fire. He put it under the shower and left it. It apparently continued to smoulder and later burst into flame.
The occupants of the burned-out unit salvaged only a few of their personal belongings.
