Sub-Standard Tenements?
Sir,—The recent suggestion that the prefabricated university buildings be removed prompts me to say that it is more important to investigate the rooming-houses and flats in that area, which are let to students and others. Some provide no adequate washing, heating, or toilet facilities. As well as being a health hazard they are a disgraceful sight. Though not ideal, the temnorary university buildings at least provide our youth with a chance of learning Why not an investigation into this vital issue of slum clearance? We know that the prefabricated buildings of the university will be removed when Ham is ready, but the housing problem, if not attended to, might continue. —Yours, etc., C.A.H. • June 8, 1965.
[The chief city health inspector (Mr A. P. Millthorpe) replies; “A considerable amount of investigation and action have already been carried out in this matter. The corespondent should supply the council with details of any cases of alleged sub-standard conditions, for investigation.”]
