Some Apply To Enrol

Applications for enrolments' were already being received for the new Hagley High: School, due to open next year i as an amalgamation of the Christchurch Technical High School and the Christchurch West High School in the Christchurch West High School buildings, the principal of West High School (Mr T. R. Richards) told the school’s board of governors last evening. The applications were being left unopened until the official enrolment opening date, July 1, he said.

Although 650 copies of the 1966 prospectus had been issued, so few were left that board members were not given one each, as has been customary, but were invited to look at two which were tabled at the meeting. Mr Richards said there had been a great demand for prospectuses from schools all over Christchurch, including many which had not previously been in communication with West High School, at any rate for many years. He had been invited to speak at a large number of parentteacher association meetings and was impressed by the attention given by headmasters to ensuring that children went into a suitable course at high school. “There seems a great fund of public good will for the new Hagley High School. This will be a good level to start on.” Mr Richards said.

A letter was received at the meeting from the Education Department authorising the acceptance of a tender by the Fletcher Construction Company. Ltd., of £39.489 for building a six-classroom block. Mr R. G. Thompson wrote to the board urging that all the school's records should be collected and held in the school, so that the school’s history was not lost. Many of the records arc held by the Canterbury Education Board. “I would be quite pleased to have all the records in the school if I had somewhere to | put them.” said Mr Richards. The board decided it would I try to gather the records as soon as storage space was available.
