Pole Leads Over-all (N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SOUTH CERNEY, June 4. J. Wroblewski, a 24-year-old Polish student, took the over-all lead in the open class of the 1965 world gliding championships yesterday. In his slender white-winger Foka4 sail-plane, he completed the 108-mile triangle course in 2hr 29min. Second was another Pole, the reigning world open class champion, E. Makula, in 2hr 40min. Third, in 2hr 49min. was A. J. Smith (United States), flying the Sisu sailplane which recently broke the world distance record with a flight of 640 miles. F. Henry (France), a 28-year-old service pilot, who won five contests in the last world championships in the Argentine in 1963, made the outstanding flight of the day. He won the standard class for gliders of not more than 15 metres’ span by completing the race in 2hr 24min—the fastest time of the day. “We are having a most enjoyable and interesting time —but we are not being very successful,” was the comment of the New Zealand team, reports the N.Z.P.A. London correspondent. S. H. Georgeson and D. F. Westenra completed the course in the open class and came 20th and 22nd in times of about 3j hours. Their overall placing is now 27th and 28th respectively. A. Cameron almost completed the course in the standard class, but he was not observed to pass the second turning point and finished 40th, which gave him an overall placing of 41st out of 45. R. Handley landed at the second turning point in the same class and this meant his placing was 38th. His over-all position is now 32nd out of 44.
