HAAST PASS RELAY

Runners Ahead Of Schedule

Canterbury University harriers are exceeding expectations on their 680-mile Haast Pass relay. With a third of the distance completed they were two hours ahead of schedule. The runners reached the Lindis Pass last evening at about 5 p.m. The teams expect to reach the Haast road end before midday today, at least two hours and a half ahead of schedule. Although some runners ran slower than a 7min mile pace, the average has been close to 6min 15sec. The Canterbury champion for distances from one to 10 miles, B. Jones, completed one six-mile stage in 35min 20sec. The longest single run was of 11.5 miles, by McG. Simpson, The enthusiasm of the runners has mounted steadily in spite of having to contend with bleak foggy conditions from 10 miles beyond Tekapo. Between Geraldine and Tekapo runners strode through the night muffled in sweat suits to ward off the chilling effect of a 14-degree frost while picking their way by torchlight. All members are in good i condition and the trip has 1 progressed without incident except for one car being decayed by a cut tyre.
