BIRTHDAY WORK
Penalty Rates Sought Bus-driver members of the Tramway Workers’ Unionthroughout the country wanted to be paid penalty rates for working on the Queen’s Birthday, the union’s national president (Mr L. C. J. Southon) said yesterday. A new agreement, reached in conciliation on April 30, provided for overtime payment on statutory holidays, he said. The agreement had been signed by both parties and now awaited the court’s ratification. Members in many parts of New Zealand were concerned at the delay, said Mr Southon. An approach would be made to the various transport boards and local bodies concerned, said Mr Southon, requesting an immediate application of the agreement, as it applied to Monday, which was Queen’s Birthday. “The only feature which is controversial at present, is the question of penalty rates relating to Queen's Birthday,” he said.
