LEWIS PASS ROAD
Reunion Of Workers Men who worked on the construction of the Lewis Pass road between 1932 and 1937 will gather in Christchurch on Saturday evening for a reunion. AU are former employees of the old Public Works Department. So far, a total of 105 men and women have signified their intention of attending. One is Mr J. B. Jackson, of Christchurch, who was engineer in charge of the Lewis Pass road project. “Some of us got together, decided it was a long time since we’d seen the boys, and thought we’d try to run a reunion.” said Mr F. Messant, one of the organisers, yesterday. Mr Messant said the Lewis Pass road was opened in October, 1937—almost 28 years ago. “We will be taking our old photographs along, and swapping stories,” Mr Messant said. The reunion will be held in the Woolston Buffalo Lodge hall in Ferry road.
