Lecturer From Christchurch Dr. R. M. Macfarlane, an assistant lecturer in physics at the University of Canterbury for the last two years, will leave at the end of next week to take up an appointment as research associate to Professor A. L. Shawlow at Stanford University, California. Professor Shawlow was one of the scientists chiefly concerned in the development of the optical laser Dr. Macfarlane was educated at the Rangiora High School and Christchurch Boys’ High School and entered the University of Canterbury on a Gammack scholarship. He graduated bachelor of science with honours in 1959, master of science with honours in 1960 and then took his Ph.D. with a thesis on the optical and magnetic properties of transition metal ions. At Stanford he will continue his work in theoretical spectroscopy. Dr. Macfarlane will be accompanied by his wife and two daughters.
