INTEREST IN ANTARCTICA

Society’s Work Reviewed

“In the 10 years since it was established the branch has made a notable contribution in directing the interest of people in Canterbury, and Christchurch in particular, towards Antarctica,” said Mr H. F. Griffiths, the newly-elected president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, at the annual meeting. “We have linked together people in the Antarctic and in Christchurch, and have been in close liaison with the Americans since their Antarctic operations began 10 years ago.” Mr Griffiths said the branch had provided New Zealand books for the library at McMurdo Station. It was looked to as one of the mainsprings of Antarctic Week in Christchurch, and it had established a fund to provide bursaries for students doing research in Antarctica.

The retiring president, Mr R. J. Stanley, also referred to the bursary scheme in the annual report. He said the committee felt it was really the most worth-while scheme the Antarctic Society had yet instituted, and the work done by the two students jointly awarded the 1964-65 bursary had been quite outstanding. There were funds in hand to carry the scheme through the next two Antarctic seasons, but further donations would be most welcome. Officers Elected
