Parliament’s Diary
Parliament yesterday debated the Government’s decision to send troops to Vietnam. Speakers were:
Government: The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), the deputyPrime Minister (Mr Marshall), the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan), the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand), Sir Leslie Munro (Waipa), Mr A. McCready (Otaki). Opposition: The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer), Messrs N. E, Kirk (Lyttelton), S. A. Whitehead (Nelson), A. J. Faulkner (Roskill), W. A. Rowling (Buller), and the deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt). An Opposition amendment was defeated 39-33. A Government motion supporting the sending of troops was carried by a similar margin. Before the debate, the House stood briefly as a mark of respect for a former Government member, Mr J. N. Massey, and the Hon. Mark Briggs, a former member of the Legislative Council.
