Sinclair Latest N.Z. Casualty

(From R. T. BRITTENDEN, N.Z P A. Special Correspondent > ARUNDEL, May 2. B. W. Sinclair is the latest member of the New Zealand cricket team to join the casualty list. At the very end of a final practice at Eastbourne yesterday he pulled a rib muscle while bowling.

It is very doubtful if he will be fit for the first major match against Worcestershire on Wednesday.

Last evening he could not lower his right arm further than his knees and he may have to have treatment in London.

News, too, of T. W. Jarvis is not as encouraging as expected. He is likely to remain in hospital for another five or six days and it may be the fourth or fifth match before he is fully fit for cricket.

Yuile Flaying B W. Yuile replaced Sinclair in the New Zealand team for the match with the Duke of Norfolk’s XI which began in magnificent parkland setting of the ground at Arundel Castle this morning.

As each side is now playing twelve men, an addition to the Duke of Norfolk's team has been made. He is D. Foreman, a South African-born all-rounder. New Zealand made an unspectacular start, scoring 67 for two at lunch.

On a pitch from which the ball came through rather reluctantly in the opening overs, B. E. Congdon and A. E. Dick started quietly against some typically accurate bowling from J. B. Statham and K. E. Palmer.

Timing was anything but easy but some deflections began to bring in runs and there was sufficient improvement for the first half-hour to yield 18 and bring the England off-spinner. D. A. Allen, on in place of Palmer. But Statham carried on and Dick, in two minds, lost his off stump with the total at 22 Congdon continued to pick up singles and twos quite steadily from Alien and then E. R. Dexter, but the whole play was being produced at a gentle pace. R. W. Morgan found it hard to make a start and after an hour the New Zealand total was only 36, of which Congdon had scored 29.

Morgan Struggled Congdon with growing confidence, pulled the leg spinner. R. Hobbs, vigorously for four and on drove the left-handed N Gifford for another boundary to make New Zealand 51 in 7’ minutes. But still Morgen struggled against the spinners. When the score reached 55 all but eight runs had been made by Congdon, and then he I ’ o '' 0# *“*

J. R. Reid began with a mas owe straight hit for four oil Hobbs out he treated Gifford with considerable respect and at lunch, New Zealand had ad vanced no further than 67 in a shade under 90 minutes.
