MOVE TO RESTORE BARQUE FROM HULK
(New Zealand Press Association)
BLENHEIM, April 30. A society to restore the barque Edwin Fox, an old immigrant ship, the hulk of which is lying in Picton Harbour, was formed in Blenheim last night. The promoter of the project, Mr N. H. Brayshaw, who was elected president .of the society, said the ship could be restored for £20,000. He estimated the job could be finished in three years. “It is hoped to have the restoration completed in time for arrival of the Endeavour II in 1969 to commemorate the first landing of Captain Cook,” Mr Brayshaw said.
When the vessel is restored it is hoped to include a museum. “I want to see it as something for the country, something for the future and for education,” Mr Brayshaw said. Mr Brayshaw said the hull would have to be shifted during the winter, the off-season for the freezing works. Mr Brayshaw said the society was confronted with a problem no worse than that facing the people who restored the Cutty Sark. The Charles W. Morgan, another historic piece, had been completely rebuilt.
