ANZAC DAY ADDRESS

Elaboration By Speaker “A number of correspondents have written under a misapprehension about the substance of my address on Anzac Day. due possibly to the headlines it was given in the paper,” says Mr 1. T. Galloway. Brigadier commanding the Logistic Support Group in New Zealand, and rector of St. Andrew's College, in a letter to the editor of “The Press.”

“May I reiterate my theme. “We enjoy freedoms in this country. These have been gained for us over the centuries as men and women have been prepared to stand fourth courageously in Parliament, the Courts, in our literary heritage, in the street and even on the battlefield if need be, to achieve them for us. “This has involved sacrifices and we need to appreciate them. Many New Zealanders today, I believe, are so concerned with the self interests of their own comfort and security that they need to be reminded that our freedom and heritage depend on a vital faith in our way of life, together with acts of practical service for others. “I said communists believe in their way of life fanatically and we must have a faith, founded on the tenets of Christianity, namely love, respect for others and service, equally as strongly founded. “Our freedoms must be defended and no sane New Zealander would willingly turn to warfare as the way to maintain them, although if no other methods are possible and our way of life is in jeopardy, I believe we must be prepared to defend them in this way,” Mr Galloway says.
