The Canterbury University Council yesterday refused a request from the Christchurch City Council for a contribution to the Winston Churchill Memorial Fund. “This is public money Government money—with which we are dealing,” said the Chancellor (Mr C. H. Perkins), “and we have always decided that it is not our privilege to make special grants.” Fair Weather Light, variable winds blew in Christchurch yesterday, and a maximum temperature of 63 degrees was registered at Christchurch Airport at 3 p.m., when the temperature at the Botanic Gardens was 62 degrees. At 9 a.m. at Harewood the temperature was 54 degrees, and at noon it was 59 degrees. There was some cloud most of the day. The headmaster (Mr W. 1. F. McLeod) said yesterday the school usually offered cooking as an alternative to woodwork and metalwork to those boys who wanted to take the subject. Jarvie, of Auckland, caught the 4611 b shark. Mr R. Queneau, of the Virgin Islands, United States, caught a 1031 b mako shark and a 601 b kingfish to make his catch three fish in three days. -(P.A.) Fuseli Drawings The Auckland City Council parks and library committee has approved the purchase of 37 drawings by Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) for the Auckland Art Gallery at a cost of £l5OO. The collection is owned by a Dunedin man. In a report to the committee, Mr P. A. Tomery, the former director of the art gallery, said the collection was one of the largest in the world.—(P.A.) Labour Short Labour was short at Lyttelton yesterday and at 8 a.m. an additional 135 men were required to fill vacancies. In addition, a shortage of railway waggons hindered work with the result that at 5 p.m. several discharging vessels were idle. These were the Silverleaf, Waimate, Kweichow, Shoan Maru and Hotunui. The newly arrived Awanui discharged with road transport last evening. Loading vessels were not affected.
