HALLS OF RESIDENCE University To Join Churches’ Appeal
Canterbury University will associate itself with church groups later this year in an appeal to the public for money to build churchcontrolled halls of residence at Ham.
Mr C. H. Perkins, Chancellor of the university, said yesterday that he and the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) had had talks with the controlling bodies of the Anglican Christchurch College, the Roman Catholic Rochester Hall, and the proposed joint Presbyterian and Methodist Rutherford Hall. They were satisfied that it would be a joint appeal for a large amount of money to enable those bodies to qualify for a Government subsidy and proceed with the erection of the halls. They were also satisfied that it would be very much in the interests of students to get greater accommodation at Ham. Mr Perkins said the university could not make an appeal itself soon after an appeal by the churches. “We would be happy to see the halls controlled by the
churches under our conditions,” he said, “and it is in the interest of the university to recognise the value of these halls and to associate itself with an appeal for funds.”
On Mr Perkins’s motion, the council agreed without discussion to associate itself with the appeal for money for the church-controlled halls.
