VEGETABLE MARKET

Forecasts Are Needed (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 17. New Zealand’s vegetable production could be doubled in two years and trebled in five. Professor R. J. Ballinger said at the Science Congress today. But to blindly increase production without markets would not be in the interests of the industry. Markets had to be created both in New Zealand and overseas. Growers should first improve quality to make greater appeal to consumers, he said. He stressed the need for co-operation in the vegetable industry. Market surveys should be carried out on a large scale with all growers helping to compile statistics. There was a need for long and short-term market forecasts, involving an up-to-date supply of information, and a like need for planned cropping. All involved widespread cooperation between growers, marketers and researchers, he said.
