The new British Trade Commissioner in the South Island (Mr P. C. Burdett) was last evening officially welcomed at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. He was made an advisory counsellor of the chamber. Mr Burdett succeeds Mr A. Vine, who left last month to take up a post in Brisbane. Mr G. T. Tagasaki, the vicepresident of Rotary International, who has arrived from Tokyo, is a past president of the Japanese Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, and a director of the Japan-America Society. He will represent the president of Rotary International at district conferences in Palmerston North, Greymouth and Auckland.— (P.A.) The Rev. J. A. Witbrock was inducted as vicar of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Lyttelton, last evening. The ceremony was performed by the Ven. Archdeacon W. M. Davies. He was previously curate at Holy Trinity, Avonside.

Mr Donald G. Grant, of Mangatoro, was made an honorary life member of the Aberdeen Angus Society at the annual meeting in Perth, Scotland, “in recognition of ins services in promoting and developing the breed in New Zealand.” Mr Grant, who is 76, emigrated from Scotland in 1911. He has been in Perth this week for the annual Aberdeen Angus bull show and sales.—London, February 4.
