FEBRUARY 6. CAUTION.—On Saturday afternoon a valuable horse was nearly drowned in the Avon, at the watering place, near Victoria Bridge. Several horses had been driven in together, and one of them sank in a muddy spot, on the north side of the river, and was nearly exhausted with its struggles to release itself when it was extricated by some horsemen who fortunately happened to be passing over the bridge. The patch of mud is small, and to avoid similar accidents, persons watering horses would do well not to drive them too far into the stream. FIRE.—Two houses near the Avon, a considerable distance below the town, were totally destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. One of them, we believe, belonged to a Jfaori. The high wind
blowing at the time rendered any attempts to extinguish the flames when they had once got hold of the buildings entirely unavailing. We have not heard how the accident originated. A narrow escape from fire also occurred on Saturday night It appears that one of Cobb’s down coaches had come in late at night and was driven into their large covered stable without the lamp suspended in the centre being extinguished. The lamp by some means became detached during the night and falling on the floor of the coach gradually burnt its way through to the ground when it became extinguished. Had the fire been in any way communicated to the stables the consequences would have been most disastrous, as a considerable number of horses were in them, together with their provender, &c.
