Auckland, Wellington Win Women’s Games

Auckland won outright by eight wickets against Otago on the second day of the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield women’s Interprovincial cricket tournament.

Wellington beat Canterbury on the first innings, by 77 runs. The points after the first series of games are: Auckland 10, Wellington 5, Canterbury 1, Otago 0. Otago was forced to follow on by Auckland, 110 runs behind, after some very good bowling from J. Stevens, who took five wickets for six runs.

Auckland was forced to bat again, however, thanks to a good innings from E. Paton, who scored 72 not out.

The 53 runs needed for the outright win were made by Auckland with five minutes to spare. Canterbury dismissed Wellington cheaply in the second innings and then had to make 166 runs in 115 minutes. It was given a fine start by J. Stead and A. Colville, who batted agressively, but the tight fielding and the accurate bowling of B. Watt proved too big a hurdle. A. Giles and P. Blackler bowled well for Canterbury and the fielding was of a high standard. Scores:— AUCKLAND First Innings .. .. 172 Second Innings J. Doull, c Sinclair, b Clough 0 J. Burley, not out .. 31 R.
