Naval Patrols Off Asia
Sir,—The post-Christmas news of the American nuclear submarine Daniel Boone patrolling off the Asian coast is disturbing. One wonders what is the exact reason for this fresh deployment of nuclear force. There has not, to my knowledge, been any suggestion in Washington or elsewhere. that China could have a significant atomic striking force for some years. So the question remains as to why this submarine should have been sent at the present time. Under what circumstances is it proposed to use its weapons? In view of the adversities suffered by the
•American forces in South Vietnam recently, are the Daniel Boone’s missiles to be used as a nuclear threat against an enemy using conventional weapons? It is very hard for me to see how the presence of such missiles can help in the cause of peace in Asia.—Yours etc., W. R. SYKES. December 28, 1964.
