They scored 357 runs for the loss of only two wickets on a docile pitch. In a sec-ond-wicket partnership, the test batsmen, W. M. Lawry and R. M. Cowper, added 225 runs in three hours. Lawry scored 140 in 280 minutes and Cowper ended the day with 149 not out, scored in just under four hours.
