Champ Impresses In Sprint Trial

"The Press" Special Service

DUNEDIN, December 25. Champ, which fashioned a most attractive record last season, showed that he was well forward to resume racing in the James Hazlett Cold Cup, the second leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow, with a most impressive galtop at Wingatui this morning. Ridden by L. McGuire, Champ was giving his stable-mate Zinder (M. J. Wildermoth) a length start when they broke away at the three furlongs, but he had the measure of Zinder early in the run home and he won going away by a length in 37 3-ssec. Champ was a last start winner at Oamaru in June. Lack of recent racing may be his biggest handicap tomorrow. Te Mania (M. J. Wildermoth) appeared to be going a shade better than another Riccarton two-year-old, Natter (A. J. Tweedie), over the same ground in 37 l-ssec. They are rival candidates for the Champagne Stcikes El Beka (Wildermoth), Quick

Flight (McGuire), and Danny Kaye (Traecey), three more Champagne Stakes runners from Riccarton, sprinted three furlongs on terms in 38sec. El Beka is a last-start winner at Motukarara and the others have placed form. Canadiana (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) and her stable-mate Royal Bid <W. Traecey) could have improved on their half-mile in 52sec, the opening furlongs in 13sec. Canadiana is a form lightweight runner in the Flying Handicap and Royal Bid’s last start win in the Hororata Cup will give him support in the James Hazlett Gold Cup. The gallops were held 40 feet out on the course proper under ideal conditions and the track was near perfect. Blue Bayou has been scratched from the Champagne Stakes, Polly's Pal and The Kurd, both of which drew outside positions in the Mornington Improvers’ Handit ap, have been scratched. A member of G. S. Barr's team at Riccarton, Polly's Pal will be on hand for the second day of the meeting on Monday.
