RACING Summer Magic Picked To Win Stakes At Wingatui Today

Summer Magic, winner of the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes at the New Cup meeting, may win Champagne Stakes honours for Southland on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Cup meeting at Wingatui today.

A commanding type of colt by Summertime from Taj, Summer Magic might be too strong for the others at the end of six furlongs.

Good two-year-olds carry weight well, and Summer Magic looks equal to the task of giving away up to 131 b.

Te Mania and El Beka, both from Riccarton stables, are the ones most likely to test Summer Magic if they run up to their best race form. Others from Riccarton with chances are Danny Kaye and Natter. Strong Team Summer Magic is trained at Gore by his part-owner, E. A. Winslow, who has form runners in several races on today’s card. Cassarook has been scratched from the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, but Golden Glen could win this race for the Winsloe stable. However there will be more solid backing for Friar’s Birthday. Calvados and Woodcock, three Wingatui form runners. The Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap is the first leg of today’s T.A.B. double.

Bellarook, one of the top sprinters produced in Southland in the last few years, will run for the Winsloe stable in the James Hazlett Gold Cup, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Bellarook is better at seven furlongs than a mile, and his best distance is probably six furlongs, but he could reach a place in the Dunedin club’s £B5O mile event today. Betting is likely to take a wide spread on this race, and the prospect of bold freshup runs by Llanmai and Champ against the seasoned runners heightens interest in the race. There will be a course double on the Warrington High-Weight and the Mornington Improvers' Handicap. 11.15 a.m.— WARRINGTON HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, £350: Ilf.—Bador (5) 10-11; The Slug (2) 10-5; Ore (12).
