TAXIS HARD TO GET
In Demand All Day Christchurch’s two taxi firms were kept very busy throughout the day yesterday, as is usual on Christmas Day, but one firm reported business was no heavier than last year. Requests for taxis came in steadily from about 9 a.m. to about midnight. When orders began to mount in the early afternoon one firm had to call some of its drivers back on duty. One telephone inquirer ringing for a taxi about 5 p.m. was told: “Sorry, fully booked,” while another at noon waited for more than a quarter of an hour for a taxi which had been previously booked before giving up. At 6 p.m. one driver reported that during the day taxis had been up to two hours and a half late with bookings. Many prospective customers were unable to get taxis.
