WORK ON HIGHWAY
Cars Going Too Fast Mr W. A. Scott, resident engineer of the Ministry of Works, is alarmed at the way motorists are racing through a stretch of reconstructed highway nine miles north of Waipara. It is a length of a mile and a half on the Omihi saddle which is at present in base metal and will be unsealed throughout the holiday period. Mr Scott said yesterday that cars were hurtling across it and kicking up the stones. “This type of work is difficult to maintain in dry weather,” said Mr Scott, “and this is aggravated if motorists disregard the 30 miles-an-hour speed limit signs.” He said that a number of vehicles had been damaged by stones thrown up by inconsiderate motorists. The contractor was making every effort to keep that part of the highway in good order.
Strack Parked Car.—Jack Bartram, of 8 Acheson avenue, suffered head injuries and facial cuts when the car he was driving struck a parked car in Fitzgerald avenue near Moorhouse avenue about 11 p.m. yesterday. He was treated at the Christchurch Hospital and sent home.
