N.Z. Players Benefit From Far East Bridge Tourney

The New Zealand team competing in the Far East Bridge Federation tournament in Tokyo this month benefited greatly from the experience, according to Mr F. P. S. Lu, a senior lecturer in civil engineering at the University of Canterbury, who returned to Christchurch last night. Mr Lu was one of two Christchurch competitors in the four-man New Zealand team. Mr Lu said the tournament

had been a very good experience and the team had learned a lot on the finer points in bidding and play. “I feel we will do much better in future tournaments as a result of this experience.” In the open pairs tournament held over the first two days Mr Lu and Mr J. Wignail, the other Christchurch competitor, finished sixth. The Auckland pair were thirteenth. The New Zealand team of four was placed fifth in the teams tournament of nine countries, each playing two matches. Their average score was 56 per cent.

Mr Lu said that most countries had a team of six which gave an opportunity for resting. This was most desirable as the New Zealanders found the intense concentration very tiring. While overseas Mr Lu took the opportunity to examine the course in civil engineering construction management conducted each year by the University of New South Wales. This includes the critical path method of construction. He said he spent a day at the university with a view to starting a similar course at Canterbury University. In Tokyo he visited the civil engineering department of Tokyo University to see what was being done in teaching and research. He also visited the International Institute of Seismology and Earthquakes established by E.N.E.S.C.O. and the Japanese Government to train engineers and seismologists from developing countries. Mr Lu addressed a society of builders in Hong Kong on the critical path method and visited the civil engineering department of Hong Kong University.
