ICE JAM INTACT

Bombs Miss Target

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) ANCHORAGE, Dec. 21

A United States Navy patrol bomber dumped bombs on a mammoth ice jam on the Copper river in the Alaska interior yesterday, but without success.

At the same time, ground crews touched off 10001 b of dynamite in an attempt to break the jam, which forced the river out of its banks, to threaten a highway and bridge and force the evacuation of 62 persons. The bombs apparently were not on target, an Alaska Defence Office spokesman said.

Another naval bomber on the mission did not drop its bombs because of the bad conditions. Two more bombing runs were scheduled jpr today in an effort to break the jam. The extreme cold —more than 40 degrees below zero—apparently caused a malfunction in one of the P2V patrol bombers, an Air Force spokesman said.
