SPREAD OF SYPHILLIS

Indifference To Infection

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright?

GENEVA, December 20.

The World Health Organisation reported today syphillis had become more widespread since 1955 and attributed the increase to urbanisation and the modern ease of travel.

The report, covering 105 countries between 1950 and 1960, said in one large maritime nation, some 20 per cent of the crews of its overseas merchant ships had become infected during one year. The report said that in some countries the call girls or “good time girls” had replaced the prostitute as carriers of the disease. It discounted the idea that health education had prevented the spread of the disease and said that the effectiveness of penicillin in combating it had generated an indifference to the risk of infection.
