G. Worthington Dies

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, December 8. The Australian-born lawn tennis coach, G, Worthington, died in Westminster Hospital, London, today. He was 36. Worthington, who had suffered a long illness, was coach to the AU-England Lawn Tennis Club and to the British Davis Cup and Wightman Cup teams. Worthington twice won the New Zealand singles title, both times at Wilding Park. In 1950 when he toured the Dominion with an Australian team, he beat J. E. Robson in the final. The next year he did not defend the title but he returned to New Zealand in 1952 only to be eliminated by Robson in the quarterfinals. That year he won the doubles, however, with another Australian, O. W. Sidwell. Worthington then went to live in Auckland and in 1953, at Wilding Park again, he recovered the title from Robson.
