Racing Drivers Redundant

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 8. Two of Britain’s top motor-racing drivers, Innes Ireland and Trevor Taylor, were declared redundant last night, the “Daily Mail” reported. Both face enforced retirement from world championship racing next season be-

cause most contracts for leading teams have already been signed. Ireland and Taylor have been driving for British Racing Partnership, the biggest private entrant in the world championship series. It was founded in 1959 and its directors include Stirling Moss and his father, Mr Alfred Moss. For months now it has been facing a financial crisis. Yesterday, last-minute negotiations to find a wealthy sponsor fell through,

and the team chief decided to withdraw from world championship motor racing immediately. Ireland, a 34-year-old Scot who lives in Wales, said: “I am looking for a job but have no concrete offers for next year. “It looks as if I shall be forced to retire, not because I want to give up motor racing, but because I can find no suitable drive for the championship.” Taylor, aged 27, works in

his father’s garage near Rotherham. He began racing in 1955 and has been constantly improving, the “Daily Mail’s” motoring correspondent said. Taylor’s father and manager, Mr Raymond Taylor, said: “Trevor has no choice but to retire from the championship next year. He will keep himself available as a freelance just in case there is the chance of a Grand Prix drive.”
